For Johnny and Me

Johnny sang of the magnolia tree,
too drunk to drive -
so I was the one to drive us home,
too drunk to drive.

And drive I did, in the early morning light,
until the Man I saw as I turned into the Wigwam
and passed out -

far too lucky I guess, home,
but another blackout later,
we were at it all again,
in another place and time.
Too cliched I guess, but for another lie.

Coltrane, go Johnny go,
blow my mind away.
Another place and time,
another phrase,
I'll play alone in my room and in my head,
not a great place to be, I'd be better fled.

Life things were different 'way back when,
must be getting old to use a phrase like that -
that is the way it is, being in this present state.
Can you write a song for me, with all this and that,
one that tells the truth for Johnny and me

Bandit

I guess I'm leaving in the morning
Before you open up your eyes
We got to be out and breaking onward
Miles away before sunrise

The bank we broke in won't take very long to find
The money's missing from the safe
The man we shot down when we left was still alive
Now there's a posse on our trail

We split the money and went four ways
Enough to make us wealthy men
I'll keep your lovin' in mind always
I'll be glad when we're safe again

I'll keep all your lovin' till I'm safe in Mexico
I'll send for you when I get there
We'll buy a villa and be rich with all our gold
Can't wait to touch those lips again (3 x)

Ride, bandit ride, don't look back, bandit ride (2 x)

My horse keeps pushing forward, I've got a hundred miles to go
To make it to the border of sunny Mexico

I can't keep looking backward; there's a posse on my trail
If I make it there by sundown, I won't end up in jail

Ride, bandit ride, don't look back, bandit ride (2 x)

Ride, bandit ride, don't look back, bandit ride (2 x)

Will You or Won't You

You were already promised,
but you loved her anyway.
Now you are leaving,
you're going away
from both of your  loves.

Who will you be seeing?
Does she mean anything to you?
Who will you be meeting?
Will you love her too, someday,
Anyway?

Oh, will you break her heart?
Oh, are you going to break her heart?

You were already promised,
but you loved them anyway.
Whether one time or many,
on a whim or well-planned, that's the way
that it was.

You've the best of intentions,
you're a generous sort;
You've given your pledge,
yet you still want to court and woo
another one.

Oh, will you break her heart?
Oh, are you going to break her heart?

Will you ever be promised
to your new love, heart and soul?
Will she give herself to you
to have and to hold, and stay,
come what may?

Will you or won't you?
This she'll never know.
She'll always be wondering
if you'll want to go, someday.
No one can say.

Oh, will you break her heart?
Oh, will you break her heart?
Oh...maybe she'll break your heart.

Coffee for Breakfast

Today I mistook coffee for breakfast,
Rolled out of the house already on empty.
Fell into the day in a haphazard way,
Bleary and groggy, in a stunned kind of daze.

I'll have coffee for breakfast,
whatever for lunch,
hell if I know for dinner.
Ice cream morning and evening,
Crackers and nachos,
My mother would freak.

Some mornings begin with good wholesome food,
An egg and some toast, yogurt or oatmeal.
But there is an ideal I don't always achieve:
Having presence of mind before I leave.

I'll have coffee for breakfast,
whatever for lunch,
hell if I know for dinner.
Peanut butter by spoonfuls,
Carbs and caffeine
Send me on my way.

Doomed to an anti-salubrious hell,
Where the grinning chef is the angel who fell -
A sizzling entrée is the catch of the day,
With a side of brimstone on the half shell.

I have to confess that I eat no meat,
So that all-carnivore diet was never a problem.
But fresh greens and fruit prove elusive at best -
I fear I would fail a nutritional test.

I'll have coffee for breakfast,
whatever for lunch,
hell if I know for dinner.
Smushed granola bars fill me,
Emergency rations
On a rushed kind of day.

Today I mistook coffee for breakfast,
Rolled out of the house, already on empty.
Fell into the day in a haphazard way,

I'll aim for improvement – but heaven can wait.
Trying to Reach You

In this day of cell phone and computers
paper letters are all I've got
I can't reach you, where have you gone
Still can't reach you, still can't reach you

We're all so very busy now
Can't even stop to smell the flowers
Time is short, so gobbled up
Still can't reach you, still can't reach you

Taking a break to play some music
Listening helps my mind relax
Artful noise, my writing table
Still can't reach you, still can't reach you

Spring is here, but it's too hot
Can't find a screen to fit my window
I'll finish this letter, get it in the mail
Still can't reach you – still can't reach you

Trying to reach you, trying to reach you,
Trying to reach you

Will technology take us over
Cause us to become obsolete
It seems machines have become our ruler
Still can't reach you, still can't reach you

Just as my idols did in the past
Writing songs to reach the people
Maybe I'll write this one for you
Trying to reach you, trying to reach you

Trying to reach you, trying to reach you,
Trying to reach you

The Way It Is

My body and me – it's a difficult state
I am seventeen – and it's a slightly different age

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

My spirit is you, as I have just said
My feelings run strong, I can get in over my head

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

She's a fine and righteous woman
Committed for life
Who could ask for more, except that
I am not her wife

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

One and one is two,
of this I am sure
I know that I would like
to spend some time with her

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

When last I saw her,
just the other day
Who knew I'd be telling her
about this awful ache?

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

And now that she's gone,
I'm here all alone
I must wish her well
While she is in her happy home.

It's alright – it's alright – it's alright now
It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.

It's got to be alright – 'cause that is the way it is.
Stevers' Blues

I'm a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad boy (x2)
Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

Been working at the same job
for nearly thirty years gone by
Won't get that promotion
Wife and kids always run and hide

Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

My mama loves me all ways
Hoping my car don't wreck
You know it's never happened
On my back is lady luck

Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

My brother, he got sober
Can't he tell I'm reaching out
Don't know why he won't ride with me
Thinks I've got a death wish, don't you know

Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

My friends have started dying
Heart attacks is what I've heard
Some have took their own life
Can't face it in this old world

Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

Someday they'll put me under
Tombstone at my head
Will anyone come and see me off
Make sure I'm really dead

I'm just a bad, bad, bad, bad, etc. bad boy
Driving fast and furious
Just plain reckless is my name

I'm a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad boy (x2)
Driving fast and furious

Just plain reckless is my name
Get Me to My Chiropractor Quick

Get me to, get me to,
get me to, get me to,
Get me to my chiropractor quick
Get me to my chiropractor, get me to my chiropractor,
get me to my chiropractor quick

My meninges are compressed,
crinkled up behind my neck
Sciatica's a big pain in my leg

My head is tilted to one side,
and though I have tried and tried,
I can't fix it all myself, so I'm begging

(chorus)

My thoracic apex plunged
as I sat down hard at lunch,
My cervicals aren't servin' me too well.

My lumbar verts from one to five,
now and then they make me writhe,
Being on the road without you is spinal hell, so

(chorus)

Someday when I've got the bucks,
instead of having nips and tucks,
I'm going to invest in peace of mind.

So when I can't reach, bend or twist,
when my body starts to list,
I'll have my own D.C. with me, all of the time.

So -

Get me to (Palpate me!)
get me to (Desubluxate me!)
Get me to my chiropractor quick
Gimpy knees and aching head,
lungs are bound with bands of lead,
get me to my chiropractor quick

Get me to (a firm push)
get me to (a gentle touch)
Get me to my chiropractor quick
An occiput that won't stay put,
I'd like to stay and talk here, but

I've got to find my chiropractor quick!
A Nap Would Be Better

Just another sunny day
People smiling on their way
Another boring sunny day
I wish they all would go away

I'll pray for rain, and play with pain
I'll pray for rain, and play with pain

The sun is much too bright for me
Blinding all I cannot see
Another brutal sunny day
Maybe I'll die later today

I'll pray for rain, and play with pain
I'll pray for rain, and play with pain

What's happening here, what's going on inside?
The end is near - I'm running out of time.
What's happening here...

But a nap would be much better.

A nap would be so much better,
Hide my head beneath the covers -
A nap would be so much better.

Another dark and cloudy day,
All my friends have gone away.
No one calling on the phone.
Now I'm left here all alone

  • But I like it!

I'll pray for rain, and play with pain
I'll pray for rain, and play with pain

Just another sunny day
People smiling on their way
Another boring sunny day
I wish they all would go away

I'll pray for rain, and play with pain
I'll pray for rain, and play with pain

What's happening here, what's going on inside?
The end is near - I'm running out of time.
What's happening here...

Justice, Justly

What now
for this man?
Gathered such power
in his hands

Playing God
(he's on his own side)
Convinced it's fate,
but he's driven by pride

Justice, justly,
shall you pursue;
The ends don't justify
the means that are used -
ask what else you can do.

What now
for this land?
Endless war,
another Vietnam

Soldiers dying
on extended tours,
Gave it their all
after what they had endured -

Justice, justly,
shall you pursue;
The ends don't justify
the means that are used -
ask what else you can do.

What now
for this world?
Genocide
in Darfur

Will Ishmael and Isaac
find peace?
Will the children of Abraham
finally be free?...

Justice, justly,
shall you pursue;
Co-existence
is absolute.
Justice, justly,
shall you pursue;
Do your ends
deserve the means that you use?
Ask what else you can do.

Memorial Day

Twenty-one, twenty-two, nineteen,
That short was the life they had seen.
Too much death, too much war,
So little of what they were fighting for.

Before we put them in harm's way,
and send them to lands far away,
We must answer the question of why -
What is truth, and what is a lie?

Remember them now,
remember what's been lost -
Remember them now,
remember the cost.

Some are left unprotected, exposed
To the danger which every day grows.
Bodies torn, the wounded sent on,
But they cannot recover what's gone.

To kill or be killed is their fate,
No time to hesitate.
A final decision, once made,
Haunting each one to the grave.

Remember them now,
remember what's been lost -
Remember them now,
remember the cost.

Young soldiers are falling fast -
How long will this battle last?
How long will we be played for fools?
How many more lives will we lose?

Don't forget the civilians who die,
For in war there is no place to hide.
Parents gone, leaving children alone,
Fires burn where there once was a home.

Remember them now,
remember what's been lost -
Remember them now,
remember the cost.

The sons who stood up so tall,
The daughters who answered a call,
Are silent and still on the ground;
It is we who must make the sound.

Paradise

Driving through the angry storm
Forest growing taller
Reaching out to touch the stars
Twinkling so inviting

Waves against the shoreline crash
Seabirds calling loudly
Thoughts of loved ones here no more
The trials of their passing

En route to paradise, en route to paradise,
Paradise, paradise

This beach goes on forever clear
Walking ever slowly
Living linked to everything
Breathing breathless taking

Big sky ever changing
Clouds transforming dark to light
Music playing in my head
Serenade my daydreams

En route to paradise, en route to paradise,
Paradise, paradise

Feeling mellow, laying back
Contemplating nature
Walking through the path of light
Change the thought of thinking

If only you were here with us
Listening to the ocean's call
You are here and dear to us
Here with us all ways

En route to paradise, en route to paradise,
Paradise, paradise
Paradise, paradise
